Both chips ship on TSMC's N4P process, both launched in late 2023, and one of them is inside almost every Android flagship you've seen for the last 18 months. A year of field data later, the interesting story isn't the benchmarks — those are basically tied. It's what happens after the first thirty seconds.
The architectural split
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 sticks with the familiar 1+5+2 layout: one Cortex-X4 prime at 3.3 GHz, five performance cores up to 3.2 GHz, two Cortex-A520 efficiency cores at 2.3 GHz. Evolution of the 8 Gen 2, not revolution.
The Dimensity 9300 does something no mainstream mobile SoC had tried before — it deletes the little cores. One X4 prime at 3.25 GHz, three more X4s at 2.85 GHz, four Cortex-A720s at 2.0 GHz. No A520 cluster. No efficiency tier at all. It's a straight bet on peak throughput at the expense of steady-state power draw.
Synthetic benchmarks: roughly a tie
Geekbench 6, AnTuTu 10, 3DMark Wild Life Extreme — the two land within ~5% of each other almost everywhere. Dimensity edges multi-core (eight big beats six), Snapdragon edges GPU (Adreno 750 vs Mali-Immortalis-G720). Read only the synthetics and you'd call it a draw. Then the sessions get longer than thirty seconds.
Sustained gaming: Snapdragon
This is where the all-big-core gamble catches up. On identical vapor-chamber flagships:
- Genshin Impact, max settings, 60 fps target — Snapdragon holds 55–58 fps after 20 minutes. Dimensity drops to 38–45 fps once the die passes 45°C.
- PUBG Mobile, 120 Hz — both locked at 120 fps for the first 10 minutes. Dimensity throttles to 90 fps around minute 15–20. Snapdragon holds through minute 30.
Obvious in hindsight: eight big cores pull more sustained power than four big plus four little, and no vapor chamber outruns physics forever. On a thinner phone without a serious cooling stack, the Dimensity gets toasty inside 10 minutes.
AI inference: depends on the workload
Both marketing decks claim "70B on-device" — in practice this means quantized 7B models with heavy memory pressure. The numbers we've measured:
- Llama 3 8B (4-bit quant) — Snapdragon ~15 tok/s, Dimensity ~17 tok/s.
- Stable Diffusion 1.5, 512×512 — both around 2–3 seconds per image.
- Whisper Tiny on-device transcription — effectively identical at ~0.4× real-time.
Dimensity's all-big design wins on peak throughput — exactly the workload it was tuned for. Snapdragon takes the power-efficient long tail: transcription running in the background, on-the-fly translation, anything that leans on the A520 cluster instead of running everything at X4 speeds.
Battery life: Snapdragon, comfortably
The price of no efficiency tier. On identical 5000 mAh chassis with matched daily-use logs — messaging, browsing, video, some gaming — Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones average 7–8 hours of screen-on time. Dimensity 9300 phones land at 5.5–6.5.
If you charge nightly and don't game much, this won't matter. If you travel or spend long days unplugged, an hour and a half is a lot.
The fingerprint check
Buying a "flagship Snapdragon" second-hand in 2026? Verify these before paying:

Counterfeits selling as "Snapdragon 8 Gen 3" have shown up in Chinese grey markets with

Which should you buy?
Pick Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 if:
- You game for more than half an hour at a time.
- Screen-on time on a single charge matters.
- You want the longer DRM / app-store track record.
Pick Dimensity 9300 if:
- You care about peak bench scores and short-burst AI more than sustained perf.
- You're price-sensitive — Dimensity flagships typically run $80–150 cheaper.
- You don't mind topping up mid-day.
TL;DR
Benchmarks tie. Games and battery favour Snapdragon. Peak AI and price favour Dimensity. Cross-checking a used unit? Our Hardware Trust Score in DevCheck AI verifies the SoC against the claimed model — worth running in markets where mismatched silicon is common.
